Dreaming in Subconscious and Waking-Up in Superconsciousness : An Interpretation by Paramahansa Yogananda

When one is sitting quietly and calmly,he has partially stilled the life force flowing out in to the nerves, releasing it from the muscles; for the moment his body is relaxed. But his peace is easily disturbed by any noise or other sensation that reaches him, because the life energy that continues to flow outward through the coiled path keeps senses operative.
In sleep, the astral life forces are withdrawn not only from the muscles but also from the sensory instruments.Every night each man accomplishes a physical withdrawal of the life force, albeit in an unconscious way;the energy and consciousness in the body retire to the region of the heart, spine and brain, giving the man rejuvenating peace of subconscious contact with the divine dynamo of all his powers, the soul. Why does man feel joy in sleep ? because when he is in the stage of deep, dreamless sleep, unconscious of the body, physical limitations are forgotten and momentarily taps a higher consciousness.

The yogi knows the scientific art of withdrawing consciously from his sensory nerves,so that no outer disturbance of sight, sound, touch, taste or smell can gain entry in to the inner sanctum of his peace-saturated meditation.Soldiers posted for days on the front lines are able to fall asleep despite the constant roar of battle, because of the body's mechanism of unconsciously withdrawing the energy from ears and other sensory organs. The yogi reasons that this can be done consciously.by knowledge and practice of the definite laws and scientific techniques of concentration, yogis switch of the senses at will-going beyond subconscious slumber in to blissful Superconscious interiorization.
Though the soul is given periods of freedom from body consciousness at regular intervals in its existence-for a few hours each night, and for a longer respite between physical incarnation during the sleep of death-the unenlightened man inevitably finds that his unfulfilled earthly yearnings stir him once again to the consciousness of the body. When he was sufficiently recovered from his sensory fatigue, the sleeping man's wants cause him to return to his wakefulness, just as unfulfilled urges for earthly experience impel man's re-embodiment after a temperory rest in the astral realm between physical incarnation.

The state of subconsciousness, experienced in the sleep, thus affords man only partial transcendence. So long as the life force and consciousness remain tied to the body by the activities of heart, lungs and other vital organs, man cannot enter Superconsciousness. The yogi,in the deep meditation, completely switches off the life force and consciousness from the physical body, refocusing on Superconscious perception of the soul's invisible heavenly nature of bliss.Repeated and prolonged sojourns into the sublimity of ecstasy satisfies the devotee's every desire and free him from earth-binding compulsion with their cycles of reincarnation.
Whenever cynically thinks that seeking spiritual progress in meditation is a waste of time, should reflect on the consummate benefits of being able to lift the consciousness in to the elevated state of Superconsciousness. In sleep all the dualities and miseries of physical existence are forgotten; indeed the whole world vanishes in to the invisible vastness of subconscious peace. If one learns to produce that mental freedom consciously and at will in samadhi ,then when afflicted by suffering or confronted by death he is able to transfer his consciousness to the boundless inner kingdom of bliss, which is secreted behind wakeful and subconscious minds even as the misery quelling subconscious sleep is hidden behind the conscious mind.

Every human being has learned to enter subconsciousness in sleep;and everyone was likewise master the art of Superconsciousness ecstasy, with its infinitely  more enjoyable and restorative experience than can be gleaned from the sleep. That higher state bestows the constant awareness that matter is the frozen imaginings of God,as in our sleep our dreams and nightmares are our own ephemeral  thought-creations,condensed or frozen in to visual experiences through the objectifying power of our imagination.A dreaming person does not know that a nightmare is unreal until he wakes up.So only awakening in spirit-oneness in God with samadhi-can disperse cosmic dream from the screen of his individual consciousness.
Ascension in spirit is not easy, because when one is conscious of the body he is in the grip of his second nature of insistent moods and habits.Without timidity, one must vanquish the desires of the body.A body bound "son of man" cannot ascend to heavenly freedom just by talking about it; he has to know how to open the coiled knots of Kundalini force at the base of the spine in order to transcend the confinement of the fleshly prison.

The Transmigration of a Soul: Interpreted by Paramahansa Yogananda

As individualized souls, spirit progressively unfolds its power of knowing through the successive stages of evolution:as unconscious response in minerals,as feeling in plant life,as instinctive sentiment knowledge in animals,as intellect, reason and undeveloped introspective intuition in humans and as pure intuition in the super-humans.
It is said that after eight million lives travelling the successive steps of upward evolution like a prodigal son through the cycles of incarnations,at last the soul arrives in a human birth.Originally human-beings were pure sons of God.Nobody knows the divine consciousness enjoyed by Adam and Eve except the saints.Ever since the fall, the man misuse his independence,he has lost that consciousness by associative equivalence of himself with the fleshly ego and its mortal desires. Not altogether uncommon are the persons more like instinct-motivated animals than intellectually responsive human beings. They are so materially minded, that when you talk about food, lust or greed they understand and reflexively responds, like Pavlov's Salivating Dog.But try to engage them in a meaningful philosophical exchange about God or the mystery of life, and their uncomprehending reaction is as though their conversationalist were crazy.

The spiritual man is trying to free himself from the materiality that is the cause of his prodigal wandering in the maze of incarnations, but the ordinary man does not want more than a betterment of his earthly existence. As instinct confines the animal within prescribed limits,so also does reason circumscribe the human being who does not try to be 'Superhuman' by developing intuition. The person who worships reasons only and is not conscious of the availability of his power of intuition-by which alone he can know himself as soul-remains little more than a rational animal, out of touch with the spiritual heritage that is his birth right.

SRI VIDYA OR SRI YANTRA IN TANTRA

The highest tantric practices are the ten schools of mahavidya (the great knowledge), and among them Sri Vidya is the most complete and comprehensive. (The practices related to the other nine maha vidyas are subsumed, directly or indirectly, in Sri Vidya.)

The goal of Sri Vidya is to give the aspirant a direct experience of the primordial life-force, or shakti, that holds all the cells and molecules of the body in place. This life-force is endowed with intrinsic intelligence; its vibration animates all creation; all forms of energy and matter emerge from it. And because this shakti vibrates in all aspects of creation, there is a perfect synchronicity among all forms of life. By unveiling the mystery of this life-force, Sri Vidya adepts are able to understand the relationship between the different parts of the body, between the body and the mind, between humans and plants, and ultimately between the microcosm and the macrocosm.

When the adepts discovered how to access this shakti and the domain of matter and energy animated by it they were able to pinpoint the precise nature and characteristics of the forces governing our anatomy and physiology as well as all other aspects of nature. And to communicate this knowledge to those who had not had the direct experience, tantrics referred to these forces as "deities," explaining that any deity (force) that dwells within us also dwells outside us. The deity that governs the formation of the human fetus, for example, also governs the germination of a seed. By knowing the nature of the force that regulates the development of the fetus we can also know the nature of the force that regulates the sprouting of a seed, and vice versa. This is the basic premise underlying all tantric thinking.

The tantrics developed another method of communicating their knowledge: yantras, or diagrams that express a practice visually. Just as modern scientists have developed equations such as E=mc2 to communicate their knowledge, so have the tantrics developed equations to communicate theirs - yantras are equations expressed in the language of geometry. There are hundreds of yantras, some simple, some extremely complex. The most comprehensive of all is Sri Yantra (also called Sri Chakra), which contains the entire doctrine and practice of Sri Vidya.

Conditions for Spirit or Astral Sight an Interpretation from the 'MYSTIC TEST BOOK, HINDU OCCULT CHAMBERS'

Every living person possesses the natural gift of Clairvoyance or clear "Spirit Sight" to a very certain degree, and yet many,do not know how to use to make of their gift. Many possess this power in an undeveloped state. And it is capable of development of these ability to any extent, when they will use these gifts to their advantage and take proper means to unfold them.

Clairvoyance, or Astral Sight (state of introspection),is not a sixth sense as some writers wrongly state, it is the true development of man's ordinary inner or Spiritual Sight, which has been stunted and injured by the materialism and ignorance which rules the world today.

Live a natural life, as did the old Seers, philosophers,in the by-gone ages, when the highest and best only reigned supreme, and men and women were taught to introduce the state of introspection Sit will, and you can develop all your spiritual gifts or inner sight.

The first consideration is, of course, the rules for sitting, the necessary precautions for development,
and the best time and conditions which are to be adopted by the would-be Seer in his attempts at unfoldment. You must also study all that has been said here about the interior focalization of the mind. That you will succeed if you follow any one of the methods mentioned here, and you will have phenomenal success if you will only persevere and cleanse your mind from all sordid material and unworthy thoughts.

In a word, unless you will attempt to live the Life, you cannot attain more than the ordinary gift of Crystal Gazing, but if you will go on and seek higher, and believe you will succeed, you cannot have any limit to the extent of your spirit and Astral Sight in any place, at any time and under any conditions.

You will be able to introduce Spirit Sight at will, and read in the Astral Light the mysteries of the past, present and future, both in your own life and in that of others ; all will be as an open book to you and the amount of this knowledge you choose to reveal to others will be entirely dependent on your own good judgment.

The conditions of health to be sought are:
  1. The better your health, the clearer your vision, although many people in indifferent health do see, yet they have not the greater powers. You should live as far as possible in the fresh air, take a reasonable amount of exercise, and try to hold the thought of health and purity ever before you.
  2. Cleanliness is essential, this includes body and clothes, you should bathe all over once a day and change your linen at least once or twice a week or oftener, if possible.
  3. Diet is also a necessity and I can assure you that you will not develop satisfactorily if you eat too much meat, as it causes heat and inharmony in the blood, disturbs the system, generating an irritating condition and causes the people who eat it to give off a coarse red aura, or a steal force, which I will explain later, entirely opposed to all conditions essential to spirit sight. At any rate, eat as little as possible, but the amount of progress you make almost entirely depends upon your absolute belief and faith that you will succeed, for without true faith you will accomplish nothing. All doubt and disbelief that you will be able to develop your inner sight must be discarded.
The next question is that of breathing, this has a great deal to do with the development of your Astral Sight.Draw in a deep slow breath, and exhale very slowly, try this during the sitting for the first week and then change to the following:
Inhale with closed mouth while you count four, hold the breath while you count sixteen and exhale slowly while you count eight (mentally).
Have the room in which you sit clean and free from impurities, with plenty of fresh air. Some fresh-cut flowers to place near your crystal or whatever you use for a medium are very desirable but not absolutely necessary. The question arises what class of persons are most likely to develop and succeed in obtaining the state of introspection? I can frankly inform you that all people can develop, provided they are faithful and believe, for "according to your faith be it unto you."

Positive, magnetic people make the best Seers as a rule, although the fair and languid type often develop into excellent Seers, but their visions are seldom quite as reliable as the positive type quoted. The necessary qualifications are self control, the power of concentration and the desire to attain these gifts of the spirit, together with genuine faith.

Now, having attained the necessary qualifications, decide to have confidence in yourself and make up your mind to mean business, then set the time of sitting, which should be kept religiously. Now it is assumed that you are ready to commence, but before you start make up your mind that, what others have done you can and will do,and that if you fail the fault is your own. You must help yourself. Nobody can do for you what you must do for yourself.
